Up for grabs is a watch that is rarely seen up for sale, let alone in Canada
The Speedmaster was the only watch that passed NASA’s stringent testing in 1965, blowing away the competition from Longines’ 235T, Rolex’s 6238 and Bulovas Lunar Pilot, thus donning the Moonwatch moniker we know today.
Snoopy, while being a comic strip character was also adopted by NASA in 1968 as a mascot to serve as a “watchdog” on all of its missions and around the same time utilized a Sterling Silver Snoopy pin as a sign of appreciation to NASA employees and contractors.
Omega and the Speedmaster’s resulted in NASA awarding Omega the Silver Snoopy award in October 1970.
The Speedmaster Snoopy was released in 2003 to celebrate the Silver Snoopy award given to Omega for the Speedmaster‘s role in timing the ignition of the rockets for those 14 crucial seconds to correct course and reduce speed for re-entry of the Apollo 13 mission.
A limited run of 5441 pieces, this one is dated 2004 - why 5441? It’s a bit of a stretch but it relates to the mission length: 142 hours, 54 minutes and 41 seconds.
Powering the watch is the standard 1861 movement that runs quite well at +6s/day with a good amplitude over 270.
The watch itself is sized and will accommodate a wrist up to 7.3” loose, as it’s missing 2 links and also the inner cushion the watch lays on (I’ve included a replacement)
Condition is excellent for the age with minor wear signs to the clasp and 12 o clock bracelet links.
This piece is every bit as functional and utilitarian as a tool watch, with the added fun of it being a rather collectible and original Snoopy.
This example comes with its original double Omega boxes including the inner Snoopy box, original limited edition matching numbers paperwork #2703 booklet and warranty card
