We have all, in some way or another, encountered the near perfection of Grand Seikos SBMG221
With a beautiful, yet functional complication, perfect dial execution, handset and dial furniture layout, its most people’s go to as a first GS or GS GMT.
Challenging the SBGM221 is the SBGJ217, the model only a few are familiar with, yet once you lay eyes on it, you’ll wonder how you can live without experiencing it.
With an all too familiar look, the SBGJ217 is every bit as classy as the SBGM221, just as functional and elegant, but amped up.
The SBGJ217 features a sunray finished champagne dial, which is the brands most exhaustive to create involving nearly 15 steps in the process.
The dial is faceted with a circular pattern that features the GMT scale and on the outboard features the minute track with 1/5th second scale, reserved only for Hi Beat watches, in this case the 6S86.
The handset and markers differ than the 221 counterpart, in that they are more elongated and slimmer, lending a more elegant aesthetic to the watch with the GMT abbreviation in colour matched blue to the GMT hand
The watch keeps excellent time at +4s/day and is in mint condition
Dimensions come in at 39.5mm x 46.9mm x 13.9mm with a 19mm lug width
These dimensions are nearly identical to the SBGM221 yet they are $2500 apart at retail
I’ve closed that gap and priced this at $5250 in the GTA, not that much more than the 221
