Hey folks, up for grabs is a watch that was never intended to speak to the masses, evidenced by its limited production of 178 pieces.
Polarizing, fun and funky this timepiece was imagined for the veteran enthusiast and collector who has moved past the noise of mass produced timepieces and wants a taste of something a little bespoke or off the beaten path.
Born of the minds that yielded the “Time Eater”, this piece is fashioned in a regulator layout.
Featuring a 40mm case carved out of polished Grade 5 titanium, the watch is incredibly light and comfortable on wrist and is paired to a Himeji Kurozan leather (black diamond leather) naturally tanned and finished with Urushi lacquer; the same process that dates back to 15th-16th century Japan when it was used as armor for the Samurai.
The aesthetic of the watch is that of the “Frog Princess” - a concocted story with a twist on the familiar Frog Prince.
The SW266 movement powering the watch has been flipped 90 degrees to create the frog face, placing the hour recorder at 9’o clock and the seconds at 3 o’clock by rotating discs.
The minutes is of course the arrow-shaped hand, with the crown of the watch sitting atop the “Frog Princess”
The case itself is fashioned to resemble a frog, with the lugs essentially standing in as legs, the purpose behind which was to honour tradition lightheartedly; since the frog, symbolizes a spell in disguise, or luck and resilience, depending on the Russian or Japanese perspective.
While a rather bold, loud and flamboyant timepiece, the regulator style layout and creativity within makes this a true horological timepiece that is unlikely to be seen on many wrists.
At a lug to lug of 45.8mm with a 12.4mm thickness, the watch is barely apparent on wrist until performing a wrist check.
For the money you get a great deal of exclusivity without breaking the bank.
With only 4 available pieces on the second hand market (internationally) all over $9600, I’m setting this at $9399 shipped from the GTA
.
