An original Abercrombie and Fitch chronograph, circa 1950. This Abercrombie and Fitch has no connection to the modern A and F store, except for the name. Before the brand was purchased to market clothing, Abercrombie and Fitch was a high-end outdoor outfitter in Manhattan, New York. The company maintained a 12-story flagship store at Madison Avenue and East 45th Street. A and F sold everything modern explorers might require, from knives and forks to firearms. Ernest Hemingway, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Clark Gable and Amelia Earhart were among the many celebrities who bought their adventure gear at the store.
The company also sold wristwatches for adventurers. The watches were often standard Swiss-made models, but rebranded for Abercrombie and Fitch. I have worn the watch over the past week, and it is keeping time, and the chronograph function works. The hands are a little misaligned, so the chronograph hand doesn't reset exactly to zero, and the hour hand is a bit off as well. There are many jeweller's marks inside the case, so it has been serviced several times over the last 70 years. According to Google, the movement is a Landeron 51, first generation, produced between 1947 and 1950. You could wear the watch as it is, but it would likely benefit from a service. The strap is leather with a gold coloured buckle. The strap suits the watch.
The watch's dial is in very good condition, showing only very minor signs of aging. I believe the dial, hands, crown, case and pushers are original to the watch. The gold-plated case shows some signs of aging, but the watch presents well. The watch measures about 38mm with the crown and has excellent wrist presence.
